Subject: MiscString issues
Reply-To: don@darth.byu.edu
Many people over the past few months (and before that, even!) have
mentioned things in the MiscString class that could use fixing up
or redesign. I am well aware of these problems and am one of the
main advocates for improvements in that class. Well, those of us
who have done most of the coding on the MiscString have come up with
quite a few ideas for ways to improve the class.
Some ideas include major redesigns of the class; some include the
addition of instance variables that would allow us to cut down on
the size on the class' interface. Other ideas include redesigns
of core parts of the class.
Before we go in and make any sort of major overhaul, however, we
would like input from _you_, the MiscKit "interested parties". :-)
In order to do that, we are creating a special discussion list just
for MiscString issues. There are two reasons for a different list.
Foremost, many of you will not care to view the potential traffic
this discussion could generate. Second, we will want to be able to
use NeXTMail to ship bits of code, pictures, etc. around to each
other, and no NeXTMail should be sent to the main MiscKit list.
There has already been some informal discussion on these topics
between Carl Lindberg, David Slotnick, Robert Nicholson, and I.
When the list begins, bits of our past discussions, ideas, and
so on will be summarized and thereby opened up for discussion.
So that we actually get things done, I plan to summarize and list
the main issues, but then attack single issues one by one until
they have all been resolved. The list will still be unmoderated,
though, so others are of course welcome to bring up other points...
If you wish to be in on this discussion either as a participant or
eavesdropper, send mail to me (Don_Yacktman@byu.edu) asking to be
placed on the list. We will archive the messages on ftp.byu.edu
for the casual, unsubscribed, observer to grab at their leisure
as an alternative to flooding their mailbox.
The address for the list (to send messages to it) is:
miscstring@alaska.et.byu.edu
The list is not yet officially active; I will add all names of all
who request to be on the list next Monday. If you send mail before
then, it will simply forward to me and no one but me will see it.
Note that we might still mention issues we consider _very_ important
to the main MiscKit list, if we feel that we need a wider range of
input in order to make a decision.

PS. MiscKit 1.2.3, the most amazing release yet, is almost ready.
If there are any last minute submissions to get in, please get them
to me NOW! Release is very imminent...
